My bathtub drain lever is broken and stuck in the closed postion. Is there anyway I can fix this myself?

My bathroom plumbing is over 40 y.o. The tub won’t drain and I tried to use a wire hanger thinking it was just clogged with hair.Under the crossed drain I’m hitting metal so, I’m thinking the drain lever is broken and stuck in the closed position.

There should be two screws beside the lever. Take the screws out and pull the cover piece off. The other end of the lever should have a hook…..the hook on the lever is supposed to attach to an eye (loop) that sits behind the cover. Try to get that hook into the eye piece, and that should fix it.
