Does a shower drain in a custom shower pan have to be installed right on top of the floor?

I had to cut out original drain to replace it with a tile drain and now with the coupler in there, it would sit about a half inch high. Can I just shim it up so it doesn’t move and then adjust the new tile drain as needed? Or do they make a shorter coupler?

If you are able to raise the pan just add a solid piece of plywood or hardy backer below it and continue with the drain.

    Hi Dawnamo,
When you say tile drain, are you referring to an adjustable clamping style drain or one from Schluter? Are you installing pre-slope to your pan? The coupler, I am assuming, is also referred to as a riser, the straight piece above the p-trap. You should be able to make it any size you’d like.
