Deal with drainage troubles quickly to look after your health
If you are experiencing sewerage backing up into your bathroom toilets, bath tubs, and showers, it is time to call your plumber. If this happens the plumbing system should be rectified instantly and any sewage must be cleaned up without postponement since it contains microbes.
While you are waiting for the plumbers van to arrive, begin to clean up the area yourself with a solution of one cup of bleach to every five Imperial gallons of water. Wear eye protection, long trousers, gloves and boots and seal the area to prevent entry by kids, the aging and pets. Use clean warm water and soap to wash your hands once you have finished. The less water you have going down the drain pipe the better in terms of preventing more sewage backing up whilst you wait for help.
The main sewage drainpipe may have clogged up, or it may just be the pipework joining the toilet and shower that is clogged up. The causes can be many, the bottom line is that you need to careful during such a situation, as your well being is at stake here.
Diarrhea, stomach ache, fever, chills and vomiting are signs of exposure to sewerage. If any of these symptoms happen to you or your household, particularly the small or aged, seek medical attention without delay.
Use a disinfectant (1 cup bleach in 5 Imperial gallons water)to sanitise any toilet items, toys, fixtures or other items that may have been contaminated by the drainage. Items that cannot be cleansed (such as mattresses, stuffed animals, baby dolls, and wooden cutting boards) and food that may have been tainted by the sewage should be thrown away.
Use a drainage snake if sewage is backing up in the shower. For the best results you should use a one quarter inch snake that is 8 yards in length. It can pass through the line with ease to get at a blockage. Sometimes the toilet in a bathroom can be fine but the shower backs up. This can occur because the toilet trap sits more or less 6 inches above the flooring, while a shower drain is normally placed at the floor level.
An expert tradesman, a plumber, must be contacted if you can’t fix the backup yourself. Not only would they find exactly where the block is but they would also clean up the leaked drainage thoroughly for you saving a lot of effort and grief. It is better to let the expert handle the plumbing repairs unless you know precisely what you are doing.
